As most of you will come to learn, Zambia does not have schools dedicated to arts in studio practice or curatorial studies, nor does it have established programs within its universities and colleges. As LoCA, we have been trying to fill in the gap by creating a Lab which we have run since 2019. After three years, we made an following assessment:
We realised that working without studio facilities, it took longer for participants to produce work at the end of the Lab. This also resulted in less development of studio practice and visual language, which would have benefited from experimentation with materiality.
The program becomes expensive to run in segments because the production and the actual learning are separated. Because the participants are not producing work during the Lab, they miss out on the tangible advice from visiting advisors, as everything discussed is based on ideas without any practical examples.
We understand the value of the Lab, and instead of completely stopping it, we decided to combine it with an artist residency to stand a better chance of helping young artists and curators develop their practices and further their knowledge through an international exchange with artists and art practitioners. The lab residency program is an alternative school for upcoming practitioners and gives research opportunities for international and local established practitioners.
Given the fact that it is becoming more challenging to study in the West and there are almost no scholarships towards art and curatorial education for students outside Europe and within our region. an informal alternative program like ours becomes essential and crucial to young practitioners from countries within the SADC region and East African nationalities where our past participants came from. You therefore donate to this noble cause through this website or get in touch with us.
